Tyler Nii Scholarship Award
On January 10, 2018 our beloved friend and colleague, Coach Tyler Nii of San Jose, was taken from us far too early at just 27 years old while skydiving in New Zealand on vacation.
Born and raised in San Jose, Tyler had become one of the great young Tennis Industry Professionals in the Bay Area having served as the Varsity Tennis Coach at Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, as a Teaching Professional at Player Capital Tennis in Atherton, and as a USTA NorCal board member. As Nancy Nii, Tyler’s mother said, “Tyler had truly found his place in the world as a tennis coach.”
Since that fateful day, we have cried, we have mourned, and we have laughed at the memories of our dear friend Tyler . . . and now we accept this most important responsibility, that of keeping Tyler’s name embedded in the tennis community for decades to come.
Tyler loved coaching all players, from beginners to top ranked players, but was perhaps best known for his love of coaching High School tennis. With this in mind… USTA NorCal and Player Capital Tennis have set up the Tyler Nii High School Tennis Award to be given annually by USTA NorCal beginning in 2019. This Scholarship will be given to one male and one female High School tennis player who has been nominated by their coach in recognition for their outstanding commitment to High School tennis and dedication to team and will be honored at the annual USTA Aces Awards Ceremony.
USTA will set up a task-force to evaluate and determine final credentials for this award which may consider applicant’s commitment to community service, academics and success in USTA tennis programs.
Our goal is ambitious, but in order to keep this award as part of the tennis community for decades to come, we are embarking on an aggressive mission to raise $100,000 by February 15, 2018. With Player Capital Tennis and USTA NorCal teaming up with partners in the tennis and business community, we know we can do this… we owe this to our friend Tyler and to the students and members of the community he touched.
All donations are appreciated and will go a long way towards making our goal!
